Agriculture as a percentage of Pakistan’s GDP has declined, but remains its most important sector, employing a large share of its labor force. Production of staple crops such as rice and wheat has increased.
Despite this growth, food insecurity has remains an issue due to economic instability, internal conflicts, and natural disasters.
Areas for Improvement
There are concrete goals policy makers can work towards to improve food security in Pakistan:
- Pakistan performs worst in the Farm-Level rubric, therefore efforts to improve food security in Pakistan should focus on this rubric
- Improving the agriculture sector should focus on maximizing arable land and preparing farmers to cope with the effects of climate change
