The Philippines has a high prevalence of food insecurity amongst its population, with the highest being in the Muslim Mindanao region.
Existing food insecurity is further exacerbated by decades long neglect of the agriculture sector, aging farmers, and the need for a climate change/natural disaster adaptation strategy.
Areas for Improvement
There are concrete goals policy makers can work towards to improve food security in the Philippines:
- Philippines performs worst in the Demand and Price rubric, therefore efforts to improve food security in Philippines should focus on this rubric
- Adapting to the effects of climate change, cultivating the arable land, and benefiting from access to improved water sources will improve the agriculture sector outlook and encourage growth
